The year is NE 366. 366 years since the world began a New Era, reconstructing society and rebuilding infrastructure following the most devastating global conflict in the history of mankind. The destruction was so absolute that no one knows what finally ended it, not even firsthand accounts from those who survived. And yet, somehow, in less than four centuries, the world has rebuilt.

The new world is not without its problems, though. Large swaths of land in former major world powers remain uninhabitable, and global climate change continues to progress, leading to rising temperatures and sea levels, forcing some of the survivors of the war to settle closer to Earth's poles.

One such settlement was Avondale, a city on the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica. But the settlers of Avondale got more than they bargained for when they began to discover signs of long-ago human activity beneath the melting ice. In mere moments, entire chapters of world history were invalidated. Over the next decades, the population of Avondale would explode as hundreds of thousands of people - most of them scientists, explorers, archaeolohists, and historians - travelled to the fledgling city in droves to study these mysterious ruins.

Today, Avondale is just one city in the country of Aetheria, a nation founded by scientists. Discoveries of new ancient ruins still take place to this day, and a mysterious government agency known as Torchlight is never far behind when they do. Torchlight claims to be a historical society, researching and documenting the ruins, though it's generally agreed upon by Aetherians that the agency is hiding something far more sinister.
